All-purpose flour, 1 cup

Baking soda

Baking Powder

Salt

Vanilla extract

Unsweetened cocoa powder, natural, 1 tablespoon (Not dutch process or alkalized)

Granulated Sugar, 1 cup

Vegetable oil, 1/2 cup

1 eggs

Buttermilk, 1/2 cup

Red food coloring (2 tsp gel color or 1 1/2 tablespoons liquid color)

Hot coffe or hot water, 1/4 cup

White distilled vinegar

Unsalted butter, 3/4 cup (6 oz)

Powder sugar, 2 cups (8 oz)

Cream cheese, 4 oz (brick style, not from a tub)

Equipment

12-cup muffin/cupcake pan

12 paper cupcake liners (silicon are fine here)

2 large bowls

Electric hand mixer or stand mixer (For the frosting. It’s possible to beat by hand, but takes some grown-up strength)

Rubber spatula

Wooden spoon

Whisk

Fine mesh sieve or sifter (for sifting powdered sugar)
